The UT Second Life presence named one of "The 2009 Ten Best Public Good Projects in the Metaverse". http://bit.ly/8MaWaT
I had the pleasure of being involved with one of the first projects (http://blogs.utexas.edu/triggsrg/ and http://slurl.com/secondlife/Educators%20Coop%206/33/254/1003) in SL at UT that was a precursor to the UT System's being the first state university to enter a persistent online environment as an entire system. 49 islands representing each of the 15 campuses across the state used for instruction, public outreach and experimentation.
The instigator of this grand project was a dear friend Dr Leslie Jarmon who passed away in November. Her tenacity and undying energy and generosity will always be an inspiration.

Realtime weather link to Second Life
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="383" caption="Realtime weather map in SL"]
[/caption]
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the US has an extensive island in SL that includes a realtime three dimensional weather map of the United States showing rain and temperature. The map is interactive as far as choosing what to display, and it is updated continuously. t would be great if this were larger so that avatars could "get wet" in their home town without fear of catching cold.
To visit in Second Life (you need to have SL client on your computer to experience): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Meteora/220/166/26

3D data in Second Life

A linking project between web page information and a solid representation in SL. Good example of web scraping process which could be applied to a wide variety of things.
"The script in SL pings a web-server every minute. That server scrapes both the google stock market data for current prices, and the yahoo pages for historical prices, does some fancy footwork and returns the values to be plotted. The script takes that return and converts into these bars"
